How much do pavers cost?

In Arizona, licensed paver installation typically runs $12.50 to $25 per square foot. That swing comes down to design complexity, paver material and pattern, and total square footage — a simple running-bond layout on a small patio sits at the lower end, while intricate patterns, larger format pavers, or a full driveway with more prep work push toward the higher end.

What doesn't change is what's underneath — base depth, grading, and drainage are what actually determine whether that price holds up over the next fifteen years.

We use Belgard and Phoenix pavers because the product itself is a small piece of the total cost, and it's not the piece worth cutting corners on.

Question 2

Will weeds grow between my pavers?

Accepted Answer

Yes, they can — and it depends on the sub-grade, the existing surface, and how the site is prepped before a single paver goes down. On any area where we're excavating out old sod, we always recommend treating the area to kill existing roots first, then laying a geotextile fabric across the sub-grade before the base goes in.

That fabric acts as a weed barrier, stopping growth from pushing up through the joints later. It's another one of those steps that happens before you ever see a paver — but it's the difference between a patio that stays clean for years and one that's fighting weeds by next summer.

Do pavers sink or shift over time?

Accepted Answer

Yes — outside of natural disasters, it comes down to drainage prep, grading, base material, compaction, and whether polymeric sand was used in the joints.

Every one of those has to be right, not just some of them:

proper grading moves water away instead of letting it pool and erode the base, the base itself has to be the right material compacted to the right depth, and polymeric sand locks the joints together instead of letting them wash out over time.

Skip or shortcut any one of those steps and you're looking at sinking or shifting down the road — no matter how good the pavers on top look on install day. I

t's also fixable: we can pull up the affected area, correct whatever step was missed, and reset the same pavers. You don't have to start over.

Pavers or concrete — which one actually holds up better here?

In most parts of the country this is a style question. In Arizona, it's a survival question. Our summer surface temperatures regularly swing between 150°F+ in direct sun and cool desert nights, and our soil moves with monsoon moisture.

Poured concrete is one rigid slab — it has to crack somewhere to relieve that constant expansion and contraction, and once it cracks, a patch never blends in. Pavers are individual units set in sand, so every joint acts like a built-in expansion gap.

The ground shifts, the pavers shift with it, and nothing cracks. If one paver ever does get damaged, we pull that one paver and reset it — we're not jackhammering out a whole section of your driveway.
